We all have things that are holding us back. Sometimes we are aware of them, sometimes they are so subtle (they may go all the way back to childhood)! That’s where EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) comes in. It combines affirmations with physically tapping on meridian points on our face to clear negative emotions. It’s like acupuncture: for your emotions (minus the needles)!

Everything is energy in this universe, and negative emotions (according to EFT founder Gary Craig) are caused by energetic disruptions. Sounds nasty right! But EFT is a simple method that works! So If you’re looking to smash through limiting beliefs that are holding you back from being the best version of yourself, treat yourself to EFT!

How Did EFT Start?

The origins of EFT are fascinating. A therapist was working with a client with a fear of water – when they thought about, they felt a knot in their stomach). So the therapist asked the client to tap on a the corresponding meridian point in their body. Then something amazing happened… the fear was gone! Just like that!

How Does EFT Work?

It’s all about the mind body connection. The pioneers of EFT found that when we have things that are holding us back (such as a fear), this energy is stored in the body. But tapping on meridian points on our face, combined with conscious awareness of the difficult emotion or memory can help release this energy, returning to balance. As scientists have found, everything is energy in this universe, and meridians are simply places where the energy systems in our body meet.

Imagine a river with a bunch of connecting streams. If all is well, water flows in and out effortlessly. The ecosystem is healthy. But if a stream gets clogged up with debris, water will eventually stop flowing in and out and the system becomes out of balance. Clogged up if you will. This is how our bodies energy system works and how EFT can help clear things out.

When we practice EFT, we focus on a negative experience or emotion, a fear or anxiety, a bad memory, an unresolved problem, or anything that’s bothering you. While continuing to focus on this issue (without distraction), we tap on the meridian points on our body whist saying positive affirmations. Focusing on and accepting this feeling will help you access your energy and restore it to balance (you can find out more in the reference section at the end of this guide).

Matt’s Experience With EFT

It all started when I went through a CTC (combined therapy cocktail) session which included EFT in February 2017. Nat and I listened to a podcast that talked about being able to bust through limiting beliefs in just 2 hours! So Nat encouraged me to go for it. I had been struggling with limiting beliefs around not being good enough, fear of what others think, fear of success, and victim mentality for quite a while.

So as I was tapping and clearing the negative beliefs in this session I suddenly realised:

I am not my thoughts. I feel them, but I am not them! And then they were gone! It was like that old story of not feeling good enough had vanished.

I felt this massive feeling of freedom like never before. This session was life changing for me. At first I thought maybe it was a fluke – how can tapping on your body really clear negative emotions that were holding me back for years? But here’s what happened next.

Later that day I was at the pub when a friend was joking about me not drinking alcohol. Usually that would send me into deep shame – I was being judged, criticised and I would conclude that I am not good enough. You see, I have struggled with anxiety for years and these kinds of small events usually sent me down that negative thought spiral! But I felt nothing but love and acceptance at that person for needing to belittle me for my choices. I was absolutely stunned! I no longer felt prisoner to my emotions. What the?!

I am still confronted by negative emotions just about everyday, so I use EFT to clear blocks when they arise. I no longer have to hold onto the story that I feel unworthy and choose to feel love instead!

EFT has helped me deepen my spiritual connection, because once I realised my fears were just as story, I realised this was not my true essence: not the real me. So I am free to explore who I actually am, where I am not burdened by the past or worried about the future! I can just be in the present moment. How liberating!

Nat’s Experience With EFT

I use EFT to help me whenever I feel a specific block come up – whether this be personally or with our business. Matt was originally introduced to tapping through his CTC session, but I came across it through our wonderful doTERRA community. Tapping has been a HUGE support in releasing negative emotions and limiting beliefs that stop me from being the best version of myself.  Some of the blocks that EFT has helped me with are: fear of being seen, fear of success, worthiness and more!

I love using EFT (in combination with Essential Oils) to shift my energy. Whether I feel overwhelmed and want to clear my head or I want to have clarity of mind so I can focus on the task at hand, EFT can help. That’s why I like to do tapping to help get me aligned before working, presenting a class or even going to a family event. For eg:  

Sometimes I feel I have nothing to offer and no one wants to hear what I have to say – that is fear blocking me from sharing a message I am SUPER passionate about. EFT can bring me back to my ‘why’ and help me overcome these limiting beliefs that hold me back and keep me playing small instead of shining.

I find I can go into an EFT tapping session as one person, and come out the other side (usually in under 10 minutes!) as a much more kinder, focused, grounded person. I’m only ever one EFT session away from a new perspective!

For me, the changes have been more subtle shifts which over time have led to major transformational growth. The fear of being seen issue for example, no longer plagues me. I’m now super comfortable doing insta stories and recording youtube videos. Sure, the fear still comes up at times. But as soon as I become aware of it – I know I can tap on it, breathe in some Essential Oils and show up to the world with ease and grace.

Why Do We Need it?

In those dark times, we feel CONVINCED that our fears are FACTS! That can be never be changed. Like the law of gravity. But doing a quick EFT session can highlight the STORIES we were telling ourselves that led us to BELIEVE that were unworthy, undeserving, needing to stay small and in our comfort zone etc. We’ve learnt to love this side of us, the side that wants to keep us safe and protected – free from judgement, failure or rejection. But we now have the tools to work through it and take action.

So what actually happens when we tap through fear? We send a message directly to our mid-brain, where the amygdala is located. When you experience trauma or fear, the amygdala is activated, sending cortisol throughout your body. But, when we do EFT, it can lower cortisol in the body (more than conventional talk therapy (as shown by recent research). But now you can ‘tap’ away your stress using only your fingers and your mind! But please bear in mind:

EFT is not a miracle cure, we are confronted by negative emotions all the time. So we use EFT to clear blockages when they arise. We no longer have to hold onto the story of feeling unworthy and can ‘tap’ into something bigger instead. Love. Of ourselves, of others, of what we do.

Whenever we find an obstacle in our personal life or in our business, we turn to tapping to push through negative beliefs that crop up around:

  • Stress and sleep issues
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Feeling unworthy and low self-esteem
  • Anger and resentment
  • Fear of success (yes, there is such a thing)!
  • Money blocks
  • Overwhelm

How to Start Your Tapping Adventure

The basic structure of tapping goes like this: “Even though I feel X (fill in the problem or emotion you’re dealing with), I deeply and completely love, honour and accept myself.” While you repeat your affirmation you start by tapping on your hand and begin your tapping sequence. You then replace the negative thought patterns/beliefs with positive ones. During the tapping, you talk through why you may feel the way you do, and you clear that belief on a cellular level, all the way back through your childhood. Take Action

Make a list of all limiting beliefs or disturbing situations you’re facing (eg: I believe I am not good enough, or that argument you had with your partner/sibling/parent/boss). On a scale of 0-10, write down how intense the feeling is (0 is not feeling at all and 10 is intense pain).

Use a video by Brad Yates to clear through those issues (search the video that matches what you’re experiencing). Continue to tap and clear until your issue is rated as a 0. Do as Brad suggests and lather, rinse, repeat as needed. You may need to do the same tapping a few times, to achieve that 0. Note: The goal is to focus on only one issue at a time for the most effect.
